Pendant lighting for a kitchen island

The pendants over an island are the lights people look at most in a kitchen, and the ones you work under every day. This collection gathers pendants that suit an island: glass, ceramic, stone and metal shades, from small drops you hang in a row to single statement pieces.

How many pendants, and how far apart

A common rule is one pendant per 24 to 30 inches of island length: two over a 5-foot island, three over an 8-foot one. Space them evenly and keep the outer two at least 6 inches in from the ends. A single large pendant can carry an island up to about 4 feet long.

How high to hang them

Hang the bottom of each shade 30 to 36 inches above the countertop. Lower than that blocks the view across the island; higher spreads the light too thin to work by.

Picking a shade

Aada, Mia and Vivi are compact Nordic designs that work in pairs or threes. Amba is a globe-and-dome shape that can hang on its own. For glass, look at Astrid and Millay. For something heavier, Vidar has a stone shade and Ronja a hand-painted ceramic one. Opal or frosted glass hides the bulb from anyone sitting at the island; clear glass shows it off.

Should island pendants match?

For a row of two or three, matching pendants look calmest. Mixing works best when the shapes differ but the finish is the same.

What color temperature works over an island?

2700K to 3000K feels warm and still gives enough light to cook by. Put the pendants on a dimmer so they can go low in the evening.
